The same US stock can appear in wallets, exchanges, and brokerage apps, but the rights represented by the token, the trading venues, and whether it can be directly redeemed are often not the same thing. First, confirm the task you want to complete, then look at the product name.
If you want to buy some Nvidia exposure, the search box might show NVDAx, NVDAon, or even Nvidia stock tokens in a brokerage app. These are all related to the NVDA price, but they may not be sold in the same place, nor may they be redeemed by the same entity.
On October 8th, Securitize released its first batch of 12 US stock security entitlement tickers. With increased supply, the comparison method becomes simpler: do you want self-custody, weekend sales, cash dividends, or near-registered shareholder rights? These four requirements will separate the options. (Securitize)
1. Self-custody: First look at on-chain transfers, then look at direct redemptions.
xStocks' documentation defines it as a tracking credential: the underlying stocks or ETFs are held by a regulated custodian, and the on-chain tokens provide 1:1 economic exposure. Tokens can be transferred across supported public chains, exchanges, and DeFi venues, and dividends are reinvested after tax and reflected through balance adjustments; holders do not have voting rights in publicly traded companies. (xStocks Working Principles, xStocks FAQ)
Ondo Stocks also places its stock and ETF exposure on-chain. The official website states that the underlying stocks, ETFs, and cash in transit back the tokens, with independent verifiers checking the backing assets daily. Dividends are reinvested after tax and included in the total token return. The website lists over 450 stocks and ETFs; this is the product range and does not mean that every underlying asset has sufficient buy pressure. (Ondo Stocks)
Neither xStocks nor on-chain transferability equates to universal redemption. xStocks allows secondary market transfers without requiring an account with the issuer, but direct purchases or redemptions from the issuer require KYC and have a minimum investment of $5,000. Ondo allows tokens to circulate on-chain and in third-party venues within permitted limits, but only qualified non-US users who have completed onboarding can directly mint or redeem ondo; those who are not qualified can only continue to hold their tokens or seek buyers in permitted secondary markets. (xStocks FAQ, Ondo Stocks)
2. Weekend trading: 24/7 does not mean 24/7 redemption.
The sale of NVDAx on Saturday may have been made to another buyer in the secondary market. xStocks documentation indicates that primary market subscriptions and redemptions typically operate 24/5 on a US business day; secondary market trading is available 24/7 according to platform rules. If the issuer's subscription/redemption window closes and buying interest is thin, the price may deviate from the recent US stock reference price. (xStocks FAQ)
Ondo specifies that NVDAon, SPYon, CRCLon, TSLAon, QQQon, and GOOGLon are available for direct subscription and redemption 24/7, while other assets are typically available 24/5. However, this only applies to qualified non-US users who have completed onboarding and is subject to the closure of the underlying market, system maintenance, company actions, severe volatility, and risk control suspensions. For those who have not completed the eligibility review, the 24/7 aspect refers more to secondary transfer and trading hours, not to stable issuer exit times. (Ondo Stocks)
The IMF's analysis on October 8th explains demand but also cautions against overestimating liquidity. Of the tokenized stock trades it observed, over half occurred outside of traditional market hours, and approximately 80% involved less than one share. The same article also stated that the current tokenized market remains relatively illiquid, more volatile, and fragmented across different networks and venues. Looking at bid-ask spreads, market depth, and exit venues is more useful than simply relying on the 24/7 label. (IMF)
3. Convenience and shareholder rights are two different paths.
Robinhood's European version, Classic Stock Tokens, covers over 2,000 assets related to US stocks and ETPs, and is traded 24/7 within the app. If the underlying tokens pay out, eligible holders will receive the corresponding cash amount in their Robinhood account. However, it is a derivative contract between the user and Robinhood and does not grant rights to the underlying stock; the EUR/USD conversion fee listed on the page is 0.1% per transaction. It is suitable for comparison with account-based conveniences but does not meet self-custody requirements. (Robinhood EU)
Securitize's 12 security entitlement tickers, announced on October 8th, are closer to a securities account path: they are backed by underlying shares on a 1:1 basis, designed to retain applicable economic interests and rights, and can be converted into direct holdings on the issuer's transfer agent's books when available. The limitations are equally clear: transactions take place within Securitize's registered broker-dealer system and are open to accredited investors in the US, EU, and other permitted jurisdictions; holders are not registered shareholders of the underlying company unless the conversion is completed. (Securitize Announcement, Securitize Stocks)
Dividends should not be confused. xStocks uses balance adjustments to reflect after-tax reinvestment; Ondo includes after-tax dividends in total returns; Robinhood credits eligible recipients with corresponding cash within their accounts; and Securitize handles applicable economic benefits and rights according to its security entitlement structure. Those who want to use dividends as cash flow must distinguish between cash arrivals, balance increases, and token value changes. (xStocks FAQ, Ondo Stocks, Robinhood EU, Securitize announcements)
4. Use four questions to filter out unsuitable products.
If your goal is self-custody and cross-application use, first compare the supported chains, wallets, specific stocks, and secondary market quotes of xStocks and Ondo. xStocks' $5,000 direct redemption threshold affects backup exits for small holders; Ondo's direct redemption eligibility affects the exit options for non-onboarding users. The fact that your wallet can receive tokens only indicates that the transfer is technically possible; it does not guarantee your eligibility to purchase, trade, or redeem from the issuer. (xStocks FAQ, Ondo Stocks)
If your goal is simply to track US stock prices on a small scale, combine traditional brokerage fractional shares, available funds, and token products in the same cost sheet. On-chain products will incur additional costs for wallet management, network fees, stablecoin exchange, and venue spreads. Kraken's xStocks FAQ provides a concrete example: purchasing with USD or USDG incurs no transaction fees, but the price may include spreads; Kraken Pro's take-order fee is 10 basis points, meaning approximately $1 for a $1000 order, not including other costs. This figure only applies to this channel and cannot be applied to all platforms. (Kraken xStocks FAQ)
If the goal is to vote, register shareholding, or receive stable cash dividends, similar stock ticker symbols are not sufficient evidence. Securitize demonstrates a security entitlement path, but it has restrictions on accredited investors, platform vetting, and jurisdictions; a regular securities account may be more straightforward. xStocks, Ondo, Robinhood, and Securitize are not open to all regions, and readers in mainland China should especially not interpret on-chain transferability as legally allowing purchase, trading, or redemption locally.
When you open any product page, first select a familiar stock and note four visible answers: Is it available in your region? Can it be transferred to your own wallet? Can your holdings be directly redeemed by the issuer? What are the bid-ask spread and available liquidity if you sell now? These four answers will change depending on the asset, channel, and time; they are closer to actual availability than the token name.
